The Birth of
Holley Mountain Airpark

By: Jim Collom

In 1991 JoAnn said,  “ I sure would like to have a place with Mountain Views.” So one Saturday in February we were driving along Holley Mountain Road and saw a sign that showed land for sale. We didn’t go down the road at that time, but a few days later we were up flying her Skyhawk and made a flight over what we thought was the property that was for sale, then later to find out that was not it.

What we had seen from the air however was exactly what we wanted.  It was a natural spot for a beautiful airport.

Now I was thinking:  VIEW? …. MOUNTAIN? …. AIRPORT? .... NO WAY!

BUT IT REALLY WAS!!!!

After a contact to a local real estate agent and a short negotiation period, the first 120 acres of what was to become the Holley Mountain Airpark. was purchased from Bob & Charlotte Tidwell.

The second purchase, 80 acres, came as self-preservation to keep a local Real Estate person from petitioning access across what was to become our nice 4,800ft runway.

After that an additional 240 acres were purchased from Bob & Charlotte to really start the airpark process rolling. So, that took us to 440 acres until 2000 when we made a land for easement swap with one of the adjacent landowners to our north, adding 3 acres.

Then early 2002 we purchased an additional 63 acres to our West, to allow us to build the new entrance road (Airpark Blvd) with the Grand Entryway and provides the area for our future Phase IV expansion.

This brings the total current size of the Airpark to 506 acres.

The construction of the original 2850 ft grass runway was built in 1993 and the actual Airpark and large runway was started in the summer of 1998.  The first Airpark property was sold March 7th, 1999 to Walt & Linda Petersen Tract #22. When Walt & Linda started construction on their hangar, not only did they NOT have a taxiway to their lot, they didn’t even have a road. Where Jetway Blvd. taxiway is now was just one HUGE brush pile. They actually had to drive across the field behind our house to get to their property. Just look at us now, it has been a true evolution.
